Dealbreaker Interview

I love interviewing bands from Merrimack Valley because their scene is everything that is right with hardcore. Unfortunately, it is around 6+ hours (round trip) for me to get to Anchors Up, but I try to make up there at least once a year. I had the opportunity to interview Tyler of Dealbreaker and talk about growing up in MVHC, the formation of the band,  and playing the Anchors Up 5 Year Anniversary show.

Growing up, what were the most impactful albums that got you into hardcore?

Slipknot – S/T, Have Heart – Songs to Scream at the Sun, Hammer Bros – The Vitality, Incendiary – Crusade, Expire – Suffer the Cycle, to name a few.

How did Dealbreaker form?

Dealbreaker formed when I messaged George on Facebook asking him to do vocals for us. He doubtfully said, “okay”. We had our old drummer at the time and our first few practices were fun. Dan joined shortly after this on bass. We had a few shitty songs that none of us were proud of. The band actually started to make way and take form when the drummer left and I met Sean at a random party. We chatted over a game of Soul Caliber and ended up hitting it off and jamming the following week. We scrapped everything we had written before and started to write new material. Stevie was a recent adjustment to the line-up but a major impact and really fits right in.

What was it like growing up in the current hardcore mecca of Merrimack Valley and Anchors Up?

Growing up and going to shows in the Valley has been a privilege. Whenever I go to shows outside of this area, I am reminded of how great our scene is. It’s such a welcoming and fun environment with some of the best bands I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t be happier to be from this area.

DealbreakeRIf you could play with any current band and any band that has broken up, who would they be?

Sean and I talk about this question a lot actually. And the answer is always different and not a simple one. We appreciate all kinds of music and playing music of any kind is such a thrilling and inventive experience. The answer would have to be every band ever created we would like to play in and be a part of.

What was your favorite show you have ever played?

Currently, I think I can speak for everyone when I can say our favorite show every played would be the Anchors Up 5 Year, just because of the significance of the show and getting to play alongside a lot of friends.

Who is the most underrated band out right now?

As for the most underrated band out right now, I’d have to say our friends in Risk. They put on a hell of a show, and always kill it whenever they play. They put so much time and effort into their current record that they’re working on and I think it’s going to really give them the respect and attention they deserve.

When can we expect new music from Dealbreaker?

You can expect new music from Dealbeaker soon. We are always jamming and writing new material. We have plans to hit the studio sometime during the summer or shortly after. The new songs we are writing are more aggressive and hard-hitting than our previous albums and we’re all very excited to share them with everyone.

Shout out to Risk, Rude Awakening, Futile Justice, Class Struggle, Dirty Work, Vein, Floods, Anchors Up, Josh Hynes, MVHC, Bad Times Crew (CA), Brendan Glennon!
